Living in the Garden Route

The Garden Route in the Southern Cape Region on the south-eastern coast of South Africa extends from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River.  The name comes from the ecologically diverse vegetation and numerous lagoons and lakes encountered here.  George has an oceanic climate with warm summers and mild to chilly winters, with temperatures hardly falling below 10°C in winter and rarely beyond 28°C in summer.  Rain occurs year round, with a slight peak in the spring months.

The Route is sandwiched between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains and the Indian Ocean.  The Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and Temperate Forest and offer hiking trails and eco-tourism activities.  Nearly 300 species of bird life are found in a variety of habitats ranging from fynbos to wetlands.  The Garden Route boasts the largest continuous natural forest area in South Africa, covering some 650 km².

Ten nature reserves embrace the varied eco-systems of the area as well as unique marine reserves, home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals and a host of other marine life.  Various bays along the Garden Route are nurseries to the endangered Southern Right Whale, which come there to calve in the winter and spring (July to December).

The Southern Cape Region has the lowest crime rate of the countryside and is a huge attraction for families wanting to move away from the smog, pollution and never ending hustle and bustle of larger cities.  The total population in George as at the 2011 IEC stats is 157,394.  These towns offer residents a tranquil atmosphere in which to relax and enjoy life while still being close to all the necessary amenities and facilities.

George has a sophisticated infrastructure with the Garden Route Mall and Eden Meander within walking distance of Blue Mountain Village and Retirement Estate.  George has numerous world-class golf courses, several designed by famous Golfers. GO GEORGE launched in December 2014, aimed at improving public transport for George and surrounding areas.  The aim is to provide a quality public transport service that is reliable, inexpensive, safe, convenient and accessible.

Situated a mere 7km out of town, George Airport has scheduled flights to Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban international airports.
